I've been grumbling about the fact that none of the installs of VIZ 2006 and 2007 that I've seen when I train in offices with those programs have many material types available; for example Blend, Double-Sided, and Matte/Shadow are missing.
An unidentified attendee at my materials/mapping class here at Autodesk university pointed out that you can still access them by opening the Material Editor, clicking the Get Material button, and setting the Incompatible checkbox to show all materials in the browser.
Sorry I didn't get his name, but we owe him a big thanks anonymously.
Autodesk University is going extremely well from my point of view. It's an enormous crowd of very enthusiastic users and everyone I've talked to is having a good experience attending useful classes and sharing ideas and tales with others.
Good luck and have fun
Ted

Tip: VIZ 2006-2007 "Missing" Materials
Comments
Re: Tip: VIZ 2006-2007 "Missing" Materials
that "show incompatible" really ís a good tip ted.
Another use of this little thick box is the following: When assembling a scene with different models -let's say you bought several on turbosquid/ 3d02.com- max may give errors on missing dll's. this can happen when the imported models have vray of brasil materials on them and you haven't got vray/ brasil installed. It may be a very hard job to locate the problem, but thicking this box will give you acces to those materials or maps you normally can't see.... and thus can't delete. In fact it just does what it says, but it's quite a sweet feature. took me a week to find out how it worked (has it always been there ?) but since then I use it on a daily basis. Hi Pim, Just to make sure I follow, because I don't have any models from vray or brazil materials, I simply choose the Scene radio button and drag the right side of the Material/Map Browser to make it wider and then I'll be able to access those materials to delete them from the scene. That certainly sounds like a simple fix for a potentially frustrating problem. Thanks very much for passing it on, Pim. Hope winter has set in too badly in Holland; it's just starting here in New England. Ted Re: Re: Re: Tip: VIZ 2006-2007 "Missing" Materials
yeah Ted, it works just as you describe.
But if you're browsing you're scene materials, and you don't tick the "show incompatible" box, the naughty materials stay hidden, because they use a renderer you do;t have, and that way you can't delete them (because you won't see them at all) winter won't really start here... never been so warm.... so you make sure you enjoy it :-) Re: Re: Re: Re: Tip: VIZ 2006-2007 "Missing" Materials
