Welcome back to an actual video tutorial!
I'll address opacity mapping in this video tutorial in response to a recent thread at Autodesk's Area forums.
Often, when applying opacity maps you'll notice that the edges of objects that have the map applied are not necessarily fully transparent. I'll explain why this occurs and the simple steps you need to apply to correct the problem. Opacity mapping is a powerful tool for simulating geometry by making certain areas disappear or appear transparent.
Download the file called Opacity_map.zip from the FTP site and extract it to your hard drive. Double-click on the HTML file to open the video in your browser.
Please note that I am now using Camtasia 5.0 which works slightly differently than previous versions. Notify me immediately if you have troubles opening or playing video.
Good luck and have fun
Ted

I can't seem to download any of the files form the FTP site with IE, and I can't connect (well, I can connect, but can't retrieve the directory) using a FTP cleint software.

I just tried it from my machine with IE 6 and had no problem, but that could be a "permissions" thing. I forgot to ask Lou if he was able to download and run the file, Lou? Hang in there, we'll see if it's on your end or mine, I still don't know the ins and outs of this brand of magic. :) Thanks for the notice Ted Re: Video: Opacity Mapping

Hi Ted,
Welcome back. We've sure missed you over the summer. I hope your travels were pleasant and restfull. I really appreciated what you are doing here and I find your instruction well thought out and very easy to understand. As a minor note, you might want to correct the "Opacity_map.jpg" link above to read "Opacity_map.zip". It's a minor thing, but I suspect you're the kind of guy who would want that corrected. Regards, Lou Re: Re: Video: Opacity Mapping

Got it, Lou, thanks very much and, yes, the trips were restful in an odd sort of way. Traveling is hard and the older I get the more I notice it. I take plenty of time to get where I'm going, but it's the time zone changes that get me the most. I'm up at 3am these days and dead in the water by 5 pm, so it's going to be another week or so before I'm back on schedule. Thanks again Ted Re: Video: Opacity Mapping

Yes, all is well, thanks much. Travel slows somewhat during the winter, so I should be able to get back into a rhythm of sorts with the blog entries. Stay tuned. Ted |
