It's that time the year again; to be a slight pause in the video tutorials while I attend Siggraph 2007 in San Diego. Autodesk has announced that they will make some announcements, which if history means anything will probably be new releases of 3ds Max and Maya.
I don't have anything in particular that I'll be looking for in the hardware and software departments, but I use Siggraph as a place to see friends and colleagues that I don't get to see otherwise. I'll be spending much of my time hanging around the Autodesk booth; I find it easier to stand in one place and meet people rather than to look for them on the busy show floor. Please stop by and say hi if you see me whether I appear to be busy or not.
Good luck and have fu
Ted

Re: Monologue: Siggraph 2007
Hi Ted,
A question for when you get back... What,s your take on Sketchup ??? Everybody seems to want Sketchhup these days and, I lose a lot of work to wiz kids that can knock out a model in pretty short order - but, of course, they can't produce realistic materials (yet) so I still get the projects that require the realistic finished look - but, they are few and far..... Do you think that there is any benifit to learning the *@#!! program , or, is there a way to import and finish Sketchup models in Viz?? I'm just curious about how you feel about this software and have been wanting to ask your opinion for some time. John Re: Re: Monologue: Siggraph 2007

Oooo, put me right out on a shaky limb, John! :) It's great for what it does...napkin sketches in 3D..., but I'm afraid it's taken on a life of it's own as the easy way to get the job done; which of course it isn't really. I think it needs to find it's niche a little better and become more compatible with other tools. With Google behind it it could become a force to reckon with eventually, but I don't see that as their goal at this point. I does have the effect of showing Autodesk, etc what can be done with a simple program in terms of workflow and that may have a positive effect on the future of all tools. Use it where appropriate is my suggestion when asked. :) Good question and thanks. Ted |
