You'll probably not remember me, I was the young guy (kid?) with the black ponytail, about the only guy in the room who wasn't in the architectural industry (or were we with 3, not sure) .
Now I'm doing my internship so I can't come :(

That type of "classes" with a small group is something I find ideal. There's as much to learn or gain from your peers, especially if you work isolated from other max users.

What are you doing for an internship?

Someone else had mentioned the Crop option and that looks like it will work with the old method of using Matte/Shadow material on the water. I'll probably do another video about it when I get home.

Crop, that's it!
And - as I just discovered - "crop selected" is even better! Just go to the top view, select the (in your example) water plane, and use "crop selected". No camera needed, no manual aligning (as with crop) needed either.
The only disadvantage is that it is a bit harder to exaclty define the size of your render. It seems you can control the dimensions of the render by altering the width in the render settings. But this width is defining the safe frame area, not the actual width of the selected object render.
Anyway... really nice that together we can improve our way of work, just by sharing methods and thoughts. Way to go, Ted!

PS just checked out some of your older tuts (talking about Max 4 and 5), but still picked up some new stuff. (changing the object in the mat. lib? rotating the object? Never heard is was possible, thanks!) Still have a lot to learn. Where to find the time to read all these tuts? %-)

Yeah Simon, that's where the Measure tool comes in to get the aspect ratio correct, then you can enter whatever resolution makes sense for the scene. Much better that zooming and panning in the viewport: almost as clean as the old Box Selected process.
