Took me a while to find a thorough, straightforward and nicely paced video tutorial (with good audio!) on Unwrap UVW, but I finally stumbled upon yours on Vimeo. Well done, look forward to the next one!

>>straightforward and nicely paced video tutorial<<
Thank you, Alfonso, I appreciate that. It will still be a little while before the next Unwrap video, but I'll get to it as soon as I can. In the meantime there are about 65 other videos on this site that might be interesting. Those you have to download, though, they are not on vimeo. Good luck and have fun. I have been spending a little time reading back through some old 3DS manuals of mine in recent times. For the past few years my 3-dimensional time has been almost zero. But hopefully in the coming few years I can get back into it. Thanks for providing the blog Ted, and I'll be keeping an eye on it. It serves to keep up some level of familiarity with the softare for me.

Hi Brian,
Glad to hear you are getting back into 3D. Many things have changed in the last few years, but the fundamentals remain pretty constant and that's what I try to provide here. Good luck and have fun. Re: Re: Re: Video: Unwrap UVW - Part 1

Ted,
As far as 'time less' tutorials go, I have never seen one yet that delves properly into the power of selection set in MAX. I am watching the Naviswork tutorials on AutoDesk's site at the moment. Where the teacher in the tutorial can use the BIM model in Navisworks as a database. It reminds me a lot of the way you can use the 'selection' floater in 3DS Viz release 2. The teacher says, Find all the items that contain the word 'duct'. You can then create a selection set for those items. Then you find all items which use term 'pipe'. Save that as a selection set called 'pipe'. Then the teacher of Navisworks uses the 'clash detective' to run one selection set against another. I remember I used to think long and hard about how I named objects in 3DS Max a decade ago. I wonder is there any sort of way that two selection sets can be useful in MAX, that would be useful to present in a Ted Boardman video tutorial? http://resources.autodesk.com/Architecture/Navisworks/How_Tos Re: Re: Re: Re: Video: Unwrap UVW - Part 1
>>any sort of way that two selection sets can be useful in MAX<<
Hey Brian, You can use the Named Selection Set field in the main toolbar to create sub-object sets and then perform "boolean" operations on the sets in Edit Named Selection Sets, but that doesn't work at the object level. I'm pretty sure it used to, but not in the last few releases. I suppose Scene Explorer might be used along those lines somehow. I'll check when I get a chance. By the way, you sent me an email a while back about cgarchitect articles and it's gone into the "ether". Could you resend that? Thanks Ted Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Video: Unwrap UVW - Part 1

No problem, I'll resend the e-mail.
There is another comment, I will send by mail also. I posted at AUGI user forum today about 'spatial controller' possible use for 3DS MAX. To put the issue out somewhere for debate. I read an early 2009 Upfront Ezine guest editorial by John Hilton, inventor of the Spaceball and Asteroid spatial controllers, 'The Proper Place for the 3D Mouse', which got me thinking about problems I had with 3DS Viz many years back, when I had first purchased the license. Hi Brian,
Just back from a week training in Holland and have your emails here that I'll check out later today. Thanks much. Ted |
