Hi Leonard,
I don't use any courseware in class, everything is custom and is aimed at whoever is in a class and books, by their very nature, are too restrictive for classroom work. You can do that at home.
Of course, I do recommend my books for reference! :) There are also many other good books out there, but a lot are games oriented and it's sometimes difficult to transfer that knowledge to the more technical fields.
One I especially like is Deconstructing the Elements by Pete Draper. The exercises are a bit complex, but they make you think and only use Max out of the box, no plug-ins. Tutorials must contain general knowledge that you can then apply to your workflow, rather than be too specific.
Thanks Leonard, good luck with your projects.
